WEB-BASED TRAINING (WBT)

According to Torres (2005), Web-Based Training (WBT) is an innovative approach to distance learning in which computer-based training (CBT). Here, CBT will transformed by the technologies and methodologies of the World Wide Web (WWW), the Internet, and intranets. WBT presents live content, as fresh as the moment and modified at will. It also a media-rich training fully capable of evaluation, adaptation, and remediation which is all is independent of computer platform.

WBT can be delivered training to individuals anywhere in the world at any time. Web browsers that support 3-D virtual reality, animation, interactions, chat and conferencing, and real-time audio and video will offer unparalleled training opportunities. Web-based performance support system (WBPSS) further help today’s busy workers perform their jobs by integrating WBT, information systems, and job aids into unified systems available on demand.

WBT are not only having the advantages but disadvantages also. The advantages of WBT are can easily be embedded to enhance the learning, can be a good alternative to printed learning materials, and also can be easily distributed to a wide audience at a relatively low cost once the initial development is completed.

Then, the disadvantages of WBT are it requires enormous resources and the software for developing WBT is often more complex than a subject matter expert is able to use. Besides, the lack of human interaction can limit both the type of content that can be presented as well as the type of assessment that can be performed.
